L. Toni Lewis

Dr. Lewis is a physician, and, since the spring of 2010, she has also been Chair of SEIU Healthcare. From 2007-2010, Dr. Lewis was President of the Committee of Interns and Residents, the largest physicians local in SEIU. She played a central role in building Healthcare United, a national grassroots movement of union and non-union nurses, doctors, and health care workers that placed the issue of national health reform at the forefront of the presidential campaigns. In 2009, she led SEIU’s initiative to unite medical residents and doctors in support of comprehensive national health reform and to educate people about the benefits of the Affordable Care Act.Dr. Lewis is a recipient of many awards, including the 2010 “Phenomenal Woman” Award by the New York Branch of the NAACP. She also received the 2010 Dr. Paul Cornely Award from the Physician’s Forum for her efforts to ensure comprehensive health care for everyone in America.Dr. Lewis earned her BA in sociology from Georgetown University and her MD from Georgetown University School of Medicine. She completed her residency training in family practice and her fellowship in geriatric medicine at the New York Medical College/Brooklyn-Queens program. Dr. Lewis joined the Board of Directors in 2011. She is a member of the Personnel and Development Committees.
